Travel Planning Tips for 2022

Much of the vacation planning process is the same as it has always been, with the exception of reading the tiny print carefully. But there's a lot more in the fine print. It is best to start reading it in the beginning, while deciding where you want to travel.




  • When it comes to trip planning, take a Zen attitude. Set your expectations for bumps on the road as you begin your planning process. Recognize that anything that goes well is a blessing, and that anything that is difficult is simply the way things are. Take your time. There are much too many details to pay attention to.


  • Make your reservation with the expectation of changing it. Change is the new normal, and you should plan accordingly. Domestic flights have a better chance of taking off than foreign planes, so you might choose to hunt for a location that interests you within your own country. Read the fine print for details on cancellation and adjustments, whether your flight is local or international. Some airlines provide free complete change and cancellation. Others only provide it at specific fares. To avoid being trapped between providers, book all legs of your flight with the same airline.


  • Book your flight or accommodation directly with the airline or hotel. If you need to make adjustments to a reservation, booking directly with the supplier rather than through a search site will be much easier. By doing so, you avoid becoming trapped in a dispute over who owes you money between the supplier and the search site.


  • If at all feasible, make use of your travel points. There are other statistics available, but the bottom line is that the travel industry is recovering, and one method to do so is to reduce the value of the points you've earned. Spend them to get the most bang for your buck. They will not appreciate the value.


Remember, it doesn't finish until you've arrived at your destination safely. Then there's the matter of reading the fine print when you get home.
