Best City Views in the World

These breathtaking perspectives bring the fun of funiculars and the drama of panoramas together – and many include artworks, nightclubs, and restaurants to enjoy as well.

1. Verona, Italy

When we went to a wine festival in Verona, with sampling stations all throughout the city, we discovered an incredible vista over the roofs of the old centre. The last sampling included crossing the Ponte Pietra and ascending to Castel San Pietro via the funicular. The view over old Verona, with its towers and palaces all snuggled around a loop of the Adige river, is breathtaking from the terraces in front of the castle. Aim for sunset if you're looking for romance. The garden terraces of the Reteodorico restaurant, located at the top of the funicular, are ideal for taking in the view while dining.

2. Bilbao, Spain

When we transport visitors to Bilbao, the Mount Artxanda funicular is our first stop, giving them a spectacular view of the city and how it fits perfectly between the surrounding hills. The funicular ride takes less than three minutes and costs €3.60 round trip, a fraction of the cost of similar rides in other cities. The view from the summit is breathtaking, taking in the whole city, including the Casco Viejo, the Guggenheim Museum, San Mamés Stadium, and several bridges across the Nervión River. In addition, the top park is a great site for a picnic.

3. New York City, USA

In the beautiful Renzo Piano-designed skyscraper on a Friday evening from 7-10pm, it's pay-what-you-want. The views of the Hudson's lights, New Jersey, and downtown from the rooftop decks were spectacular. Even better, we had the entire venue and exhibits to ourselves. For a fresh perspective of the city, head around the block to the High Line, where you can peer into the residences of the affluent and famous as you pass by their windows.

4. Capetown, Africa

This city has to be one of the most beautiful on the planet, and the view from the top of Table Mountain is breathtaking. However, few people are aware that it is much more stunning from Lion's Head. At about 700 metres, Lion's Head offers the most spectacular views of Cape Town and the surrounding mountains. The two-hour trip includes some hard climbs and, on one path, clinging to chains near precipices, but it's all incredibly gratifying and enjoyable. The route snakes around theBergen at nightfall is a spectacular sight, especially when seen from near the top station of the Flibanen funicular train. The view is stunning throughout the day, but the lights of the city and the ships in the port come alive in the evening, especially if the weather is chilly and clear. That viewpoint may have caused a bended-knee moment if my partner and I hadn't previously discussed not getting married... You don't have to take the train to see it: you can stroll up from the city centre to the viewpoint and then return for a coffee or another pricey drink. mountain, providing panoramic views of the surrounding region. There's also a vertigo-inducing rocky outcrop at the very top for the courageous, excellent for posing on Instagram!
